This is so wrong.. Why the hell do we want to have a whale shark in a fish tank? No matter how big an aquarium is, it's still a bloody tank and it's wrong to keep such magnificent animals all trapped in such a tiny place..
We're talking about creature who roams the ocean; we're talking about creature who swims miles and miles everyday.. and you want to keep them in a teeny tank?! Can I keep the spokesperson in a storeroom (I'm talking about HDB storeroom) for a week and see jus how he feels..
So it brings in curious onlookers, but at what cost? Are we so desperate that we need such gimmicks to attract tourists?
It's so wrong.. just look at killer whales, have you ever seen a killer whale with bent dorsal fin? It's just sad.. and how many whale sharks actually survive in captivity? We're not even talking about breeding here, we're just talking about survival. If the whale shark cannot even survive in capitvity, how dare you even talk about conservation!
Do they even know what conservation is about?! You catch a creature, you tear them away from their natural environment, you put them up for display and you call that conservation?! Fine, we shall not keep the spokesperson in capitivity this time, why not we put his children in in a glass tank and then tell we're just trying to protect them, just see how he will feel.
Money is not the all important thing in life, there's so much more things that are important but somehow the people up there, you know the people in white just have no idea.. to them money is everything.. money money money.. how dare the people in white blame video games for all the recent events, they have to blame their policies, their it's sucess-or-nothing policies which pushes people to extreme.

Are trains really the way to go?
We're having 2 more train lines in the works and will be up by 2020, but is it really necessary? Now that I'm staying at Hougang most of the time (oh yah, I stay in hougang but my block is under punggol-pasir ris and not aljunied or hougang.. damn.. and I was hoping to be able to vote again come the next elections), I do take the NEL pretty often and somehow I can understand why the train frequency is so low. Of course there's lots of pple waiting for the train to get back to Hougang/Sengkang, but if you look at the train going in the opposite direction, it's virtually empty.
So what does the train going from Punggol to Harborfront have to do with the train going from Harborfront to Punggol? Well basically train service is a loop service, they go round and round.. so while it's profitable to run the train from Harbourfront to Punggol, it's not really profitable to run the train from Punggol to Harbourfront. Since NEL is not a government run service, it's not reasonable to expect it not to make profits, no one would work for zero benefits, that's just commonsense.
And it's also commonsense that the human traffic from Punggol to Harborfront would be virtually zero during the evening peak hours, so the question is, why? Why build a line which would not be fully utilized? Either they based their calculations on the wrong assumptions, or maybe they are just too optimistic.. Looking at the case of NEL, I really wonder if the two new lines would face the same fate.. It just seem wrong to me that we build and build without really knowing why? Is the demand really there? Does it really benefit the residents?
For pple who had been Hougang residents from long long ago, I think majority would agree that bus services served them better, they used to be so many bus going from Hougang to almost any part of Singapore and especially to town area.. now in order to go to Orchard Road, I would have to walk to the train station, take a train to Dhoby Ghuat then take another train to Orchard, else I can take the special city bus service, which costs more than 3 bucks, has an half an hour interval and only run on off-peak hours.. In the past, most Hougang residents can just go to the bus stop in front of their place and take a bus which goes directly from Hougang to town.
Although I prefer trains to buses coz their timing are more reliable, buses are still more convenient. So instead of trains which have such a high infrastructure cost, why not just open up more bus routes? And bus have an advantage compared to trains, when trains break down (like the recent 7 hour down-time), so many people get affected, if a bus train down, under a hundred get affected, isn't that better?
But then again, more buses means more traffic and maybe even congestion.. true.. but dun we have congestion because of all the building of the train lines? I dunno, I cant even remember when the junction outside Suntec have straight roads.. all the never ending digging.
I just dun think we should spend so much money building train lines when we can better utilize the money on planning bus routes.

You reap what you sow

In the name of progress.. my my, what a convenient excuse, add helping the poor into the same line, it's the perfect reason to raise GST. More than half a year ago, we already knew that GST is gonna increase till 7%, nope, not that we have the power of foresight, but when you vote an elitist party into power, that is what you're gonna have. Hey, it was the majority's choice, so stop whining about it.
Economics is really very much about theories theories and more theories, does it really apply to real life? Of course it does, after the event had happen that is, we always have 20/20 hindsight. Increasing GST is a sound economic means to help the poor, yah that's true in theory, but how true is it in really life? On one hand the government is reducing corporate tax and on the other hand, they are increasing GST. I'm all for attracting businesses, but is giving tax rebates all the government can do? What about the wonderful infrastructure that they constantly boast of? What about the wonderful work force? Is that not enough to attract the businesses. In the real world, it's a sad yes, our infrastructure is good but not great, our workers are good but not cheap, in a world of bottom lines, the lowest cost always win.
Instead of coming up with a temporary solution like reducing corporate tax, should the government not think of other means to attract more companies into Singapore? We used to have leaders who can visualize our future, leaders who can think ahead. But these days, we only have leaders who go for quick, short-term solutions, do they seriously think that the casino is gonna bring the money into Singapore?? When the announcement for casinos came, I'm happy coz I like to have a chance to gamble proper in Singapore, but the ridiculous reasons the government came up with to justify the casinos? Ha. Exactly how bad is our economy that we have to depend on casinos for our future?
Singapore can never be another Las Vegas or Macau, our people and government are too uptight to ever welcome guest like those two places. Remember we are "conservative people", no gays, no vice.. Ha.

With the things going on now, I rather move overseas then come back to Singapore as a foreign talent, what's the point of a pink ic when all the government do is to rip you off? I know the world is not fair, so dear Singapore Government, stop complaining that Singaporeans are quitters coz you made us so.

Ideals and Democracy
This is an amazing post by someone who gave his life to his country and the ideals that his country stands for.
Bush may be fucked up, but when the people have a voice, things can change. That's the fundamental difference between Singapore and the States. The States is a democratic society and Singapore is a "democratic" society.
When did Singaporeans have a voice? Back when Singapore was still a British colony. The truth is sad, but when PAP in power and paranoid about losing the power, Singaporeans will always suffer. We do not look for free speech for the sake of free speech, we look for free speech so that when the need arises, we can speak up.
How many voices were stifled before Durai was brought down by his own arrogance? How many more voices needs to be stifled before the powers understand that they need to listen to us? The people are the things that matters, not GDP, not the number of foreigners that comes into this nation.
The powers need to understand that we are the ones that makes them who they are right now. The elite should live a day in the shoes of the normal Singaporean and try to comprehen exactly how we feel. Policies after policies, campaigns after campaigns, most done without a proper understanding of the needs of the people.
What we need is a voice, all we want is a home and a kind society. Singapore is a pressure cooker right now, the weak gets seeded out, the old gets dumped to JB, is this a place where people want to bring up their children?

After Pat's Birthday

It is Pat's birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military. He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice... until we get out.
Much has happened since we handed over our voice:
Somehow we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can't be called a civil war even though it is. Something like that.
Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them. Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few "bad apples" in the military.
Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet. It's interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.
Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.
Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.
Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.
Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.
Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.
Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.
Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.
Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.
Somehow torture is tolerated.
Somehow lying is tolerated.
Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.
Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.
Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.
Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.
Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.
Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.
Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.
Somehow this is tolerated.
Somehow nobody is accountable for this.
In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people. So don't be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity. Most likely, they will come to know that "somehow" was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.
Luckily this country is still a democracy. People still have a voice. People still can take action. It can start after Pat's birthday.

Police-Free Morning.. almost..
Finally the ordeal is over, no more police hanging around and staring at us like we've done something wrong; no more silly traffic police trying to tell us that we should not cross the road coz people got hurt. Well almost..
Today is the first after a long while since I've stepped out of the train station and see no police in sight.. Zero.
Citylink was clear too, no police at every single pillar.
Marina was clear, hardly any people around except for some models rehearsing for the Saudi Arabia thingy.
It's only at the entrance of PanPac where I saw one single police standing guard. I guess not all the IMF pple have left town.
But it's a good sign, finally things are getting back to normal. The shops in the suntec area must be thanking god right now for finally their sales can get back to normal, oh, so must the taxi drivers..
I really think this whole IMF is a flop, right from the start till the end. Except for our own papers, I don't think we had much positive feedback. I think, if the govt could just allocate half of the money and let my PR team handle this event, we will be able to be a much better job. After all, my PR team are professionals.
Now, I complain a lot about the government and singapore politics in general. And no, I do not have solutions, I only have displeasure, but at least I voice out my thoughts, at least I show my displeasure and not take it as it is. I do not think that complaining about singapore politics is a bad thing, at least it shows that I care, and that I think.
I do not take things as it is, so what if my voice is only heard by one and the "gods" in the upper echelons will never hear me?? At least one person understands the indignities I felt. I will not sit down and let the government walk all over me, it's not right. I'm not the most righteous person when I see something so fundamentally wrong, I have to say something.
So I will continue with my criticism, I will continue with my complains, if I can think of solutions, I will voice out, but if not, why do we pay LHL 70k a month?! Coming up with policies and solutions is his problem, not mine.

Almost on the same track.. The issue of children. My buddies know that I only like children when they are quiet, once they start to cry or make noise, I will give them that disgusted face. Now don't come telling me that things will be different when the child is their own, that's bullshit, if a person don't like something, they will never like it, so why force them to??
Now this issue is almost on the same track coz I do not see a future for my children in Singapore. Nope. Just look at the screwed-up education system, just look at the tons of work that children as young as 4 years old have to do. Where's their childhood? Singapore is only good for it's security, other than that, I really do not see any other merits for raising my child here.
I rather have my child grow up in places like Australia, places with natural beauty and a slower pace of life. I'm already stuck in the rat race, I do not want my children to suffer the same fate. Just look at me and the average Singaporean, do we have dreams? Do we have ambitions? No, all we want is to find a good job and that's it. A life without dreams, it's one of the saddest things in life.
Maybe I will grow to like children, maybe I will find an environment suitable to raise kids, but in the meantime, I shall just have my doggies :)

Imposters at IMF!
I’m surprised I can’t find anything on it. It was such a big hoo-ha at the airport yesterday and it's still probably buzzing in the right circles. Haven heard about it?? Hey, it’s all about clearance :p
There’s imposters pretending to be IMF delegates and they even come with the official passes!! *amazing* But what’s puzzles me is the question “why?” Why would these people want to pretend to be delegates? To enjoy the well-known cuisine that Singapore will dish out? Or the police’s paranoid is something real? Is the threat real??
But if that reasoning is true? Then why can’t I find anything on it? Stale news? Shouldn’t they report it as it’s really good PR for the police force, the police managed to crack down these imposters the moment they step into our grounds, isn’t that something to be proud of??

Well business seems to be picking up, just a little. The area is not as deserted as yesterday but the crowd is still thin. I must say, Bakerzin is smart, they chose this time to renovate, best time to cut loss.
The one thing I'm pretty angry about the detour and extra ERP charges, I don't mind the extra time, but extra ERP charges jus coz I need to detour?? I have to go through ERP gantries twice just to get from orchard to suntec, how ridiculous is that?

There’s imposters pretending to be IMF delegates and they even come with the official passes!! *amazing* But what’s puzzles me is the question “why?” Why would these people want to pretend to be delegates? To enjoy the well-known cuisine that Singapore will dish out? Or the police’s paranoid is something real? Is the threat real??
But if that reasoning is true? Then why can’t I find anything on it? Stale news? Shouldn’t they report it as it’s really good PR for the police force, the police managed to crack down these imposters the moment they step into our grounds, isn’t that something to be proud of??

Lo the hypocrisy
Seen the sunflowers lining the streets? When do sunflowers grow native in Singapore? Then have you seen the rows and rows of chrysanthemums? It's like chinese new year, except for chinese new year, the government would never bother to line the streets with flowers like so.
No, we will only get to see flowers coz our government is bending over to impress the delegates. To put it in a nasty way, it's like bending over and asking them to screw us in the arse, that's how it feels like. It's one thing to line the street with scrubs and maybe flowering plants like ixora, all these are commonly seen around the nation, but to put up sunflowers, plants that will only last for two weeks?! The point being?? It's such a waste of time and money.
Instead of spending such money to impress the delegates, shouldn't they spend the money on more worthy cause like allowing street protests? Of course there's a possibility of riots, but that's up to the police to manage. The government is banning protests because of the inept police, that's the feeling they give me. If the police force is as good as they make them out to be, then why not allow protests and peaceful marches? It's because the police is not confident of their abilities and thus putting a blanket ban on all protests.
Oh, that is of course based on the assumption that pappy is open enough to allow protest, which we all know that they are not.
Hypocrites.
Asking us to smile at the delegates. Think about this, exactly how many people know what the World Bank does? Lend money to countries and then?? That's why I find so puzzling about the whole 4 million smiles campaign, they ask us to smile and they don't bother to tell us who these people are. They seriously expect us to smile at perfect strangers who we have no idea what they are about? How would we know that they are not screwing with our arse while we are smiling at them??
All these does not make sense.
And this whole thing is a fucking pain in the arse, Ah Dear have to be on shift duty and so he will not be meeting me for the next two weeks. See why I'm so irritated by this whole thing??
Don't tell me about the extra income and etc, don't they know that shops around the suntec around will be suffering from decrease in sales for the whole IMF period? It's not the first time that we have such conference and it will not be the first time something like that happens. I can already see the decline in business, Breadtalk at CityLink is actually empty this morning, when it's usually packed with people on a normal morning.
To end it all, pappies are nothing but H.Y.P.O.C.R.I.T.E.S. and they are trying to make us like them. Fuck them all, I shall not frown at the delegates, they are not the ones who are the hypocrites, I shall just pretend that they are not there.

Blue vs Pink
I always liked pink, but sometimes blue takes my fancy too..
Being a pink ic holder, I'm surprised at how little privileges I have over blue ic holders. I'm born a Singaporean and I'll probably die as one, yet the government do not deem me as important as a blue ic holder. What are the perks of pink over blue? I can only think of one, you don't have to pay registration fees when you apply for national library membership. What are the perks of blue over pink? There's no need for NS. That's 20 bucks versus 2 years of a guy's life.
I heard an interview the other day in regards to this pink and blue issue. The blue ic holder was saying, why should he apply for citizenship when the perks of being a PR and a citizen are almost the same? Why not just hold on to another nationality and yet enjoy the perks of pink ic holders?
That's where our policy had gone wrong, when the government places more emphasis on foreigner and are doing nothing for Singaporeans. Our government goes all out to woo immigrants but they seem to have forgot all about us. We are your people, we are the ones that stays when the tough gets going, not the foreigners?? For goodness sake get your priorities right.
And stop pushing the blame to us, if we are really facing a population problem now, it's because of the stop-at-2 policy implemented back 20+ years back. Bringing in more foreigners now will not solve the issue of the aging population, it will only worsen it 20 years down the road. Please do not push your mistakes to us. We are not to blame, your policies are.
That's why I would rather have a dog than children, what kinda future would my children have? The PM seems to think that having children is as easy as 1-2-3, we just need to do it.. Hello.. there's so much things to consider when it comes to having children, it's not cheap to raise a kid. Of course, many would start going, back in those days, my mum can single-handedly bring up 10 kids. Yah, that's the thing, it's FUCKING "IN THOSE DAYS", we are not living in the 60s~70s, it's the god damn 21st century right now, we cannot live on love and fresh air alone. Let's not even talk about dole coz our dear government will never let that happen.
Tell me, what kinda future will my children have? It's not a simple question of having more children, it's a question of environment. Immigrant is not a solution and never will be one.
I shall just go rescue a few more doggies from the pound.

Mee Siam
Oh I love mee siam, it's one of my fav malay dish :p after soto ayam :p
That mee siam without hum is really the joke of the century, but look deeper and it gets real sad. Ok, we know that our PM was referring to laksa, but the thing is, how can one mix up laksa with mee siam??
That reminded me of the time I was at Rasa and having breakfast. For their buffet spread, they have the standard western stuff and asian dish, one of the asian dish was laksa. It seems like laksa, but on closer look, it's actually mee siam with laksa gravy, that's what the hotel did to get rid of leftovers and to cheat the angmos.
I'm a singaporean, I grew up with all these food, I'm not bluffed.
So why did our PM mix the two up? Maybe coz with his 5-digit monthly salary, he only ate laksa at Rasa and so he thought that's the real thing? Or with his fat salary, he's not bothered about mee siam or laksa at all. Hey, if I earn so much every month, I would go for my foie gras and wagyu, what laksa? Unless it's lobster laksa of course.
That's how disconnected our leaders are, to the point that they cannot even differentiate two of our staple dish. It's sad.. really sad.. Mee siam mai hum.. Can I have teh-o mai teh??

More lawyers
SMU is gonna start their own law school to produce more lawyers.. interesting.
Last time I heard, we have way too many lawyers in Singapore, so much so to the point that a customer can bargain down the legal fees for competition is stiff. So why do they need more lawyers? Or am I just misinformed?
My dad told me about the bargaining part, that's why his friends did, bargain with a lawyer. Now can you imagine that happening in the past?

hmm.. I dunno, I guess we're talking about different kinda lawyers, or maybe lawyers of a different celibre?
Oversupply? Undersupply? Either way, I feel that these stuff are best left to the market to short out and our dear govt should keep their nose out of it.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder, is age getting to him?? Dismissing common law?? How can we be a global city when common law is not respect? How can companies feel safe to invest in a country where common law is dismissed?
I really don't get it.
The Singapore media, they can only report facts and that's it, they cannot have any opinions about the local politics else they would be considered partisan players. Yah, then what about all the comments on politics of other nations, does that mean they are partisan players of other countries??
It does not make sense, a newspaper is a newspaper for it contains analysis, opinions and comments, take that out and all you have are comics, or maybe even not for comics are opinion pieces.
How can we ever bring up a child in such an environment? Where they are so protected? Where they are not encouraged to think? The child would only turn out to be another drone, toiling for the Singapore economy. He would be one of the apathetic youngsters who do not even know who our PM is.
It is not that youngsters are not interested in politics, it is them who made us scared of politics, it is them who brainwash us into being apathetic.
A friend asked me if Singapore will fall when MM Lee dies, I said no. We are much stronger than that. It will be a shock to the nation when he passes on, but it does not mean that we will collapse, Rome was not built in a day, Singapore will not fall in a day. Singapore is not just about him, it's about us, the people.
Young Lee may not be the strong leader his father was, but Singapore can survive through his leadership. It's a gut feel, we can survive and we will survive, with or without the Lee family. And if all else fails, we can always migrate to Australia.
